The music plan I'd hand my own DJ

I played Afro house, disco house, EDM and the 70s–2000s for years before B&W grew into what it is. This planner is how I think about a corporate night: phase by phase, crowd first.

How a corporate night actually flows

A corporate crowd is not a club crowd. Half the room came for the dinner, a third came to dance, and the CEO needs a walk-on that doesn't feel like a boxing match. The music has a different job in every phase, so the planner splits your night into phases and gives each one a tempo range, a volume level and a genre mix.

PhaseBPMVolumeJob of the music
Arrival95–112LowSet the mood without competing with hellos
Dinner80–105BackgroundFill silence, never interrupt conversation
Speeches—OffWalk-on stings only
The lift108–118MediumSingalongs that pull people out of their chairs
Dance floor115–122HighBuild across eras so every age group joins
Peak120–128FullAfro house, amapiano and anthems
Last song100–125HighOne unifying anthem, then lights up

Then it adjusts for your crowd. A room that's mostly under 35 gets more amapiano and Afro house. A 40+ room gets more disco and SA classics. Pick "Proudly South African" and the peak leans on Afro house and amapiano. Choose "Band + DJ" and the planner hands dinner and the lift to the band, then times the DJ handover.

Why we plan music like production

We've run concerts for Pharrell, Usher, Post Malone and Kanye West, and produced Klipdrift Golden Beats. On big shows, music cues sit on the same run sheet as lighting and video. Pair this planner with our run-of-show generator and read DJ vs live band if you're still choosing.

Frequently asked questions

What music should play at a corporate year-end function?

Start with lounge and soul at dinner. Lift the room with singalongs everyone knows (disco, 80s, SA classics like Brenda Fassie or Mango Groove). Then build the dance floor into Afro house, amapiano and anthems. The exact mix depends on the age spread and vibe of your crowd, which is what this planner adjusts for.

Should music play during speeches?

No. Turn music off completely under speeches. Use a 10–15 second walk-on for each speaker and a short sting for each award winner, and agree the cue words with your MC beforehand.

What BPM is good for a corporate dance floor?

As a planning guide: about 115–122 BPM to open the floor and 120–128 BPM at peak. Amapiano usually sits a little slower and Afro house in the low-to-mid 120s. Good DJs move within those ranges based on how the floor responds.

Do I need a music licence for a corporate event in South Africa?

Playing music in public generally needs both a SAMRO licence (songwriters and publishers) and a SAMPRA licence (recordings). SAMRO also licenses DJs and event promoters. Ask your venue whether its licences cover your event, and confirm your DJ is licensed.

Band, DJ or both?

Both works best for most evening functions: the band carries dinner and the lift, and the DJ takes the dance floor with a seamless handover. A DJ alone is more flexible and cheaper; a band alone suits shorter, more formal evenings.

Can B&W supply the DJ, band and sound?

Yes. Our sound, lighting and staging are in-house, and we book DJs, bands and MCs for corporate events across South Africa. Download your plan and click “Book B&W entertainment” to send it to our bookings team.
