From a family estate to the country's election night
Gallagher Convention Centre was developed on the Gallagher family's Midrand estate and opened in the early-to-mid 1990s (the venue's own site says 1993; Wikipedia says 1995). HCI acquired it in 2006. It sits on the N1 corridor midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria, which makes it the natural meeting point for delegates coming from both cities — a geographic advantage no competitor in Gauteng can replicate.
Scale
Roughly 25,000 m² of exhibition space, 27 venues, approximately 350 events a year and 5,000 parking bays. Halls 1–5 take 700 to 7,000 guests each, giving producers a genuine range from mid-scale conferences to large-format trade shows and exhibitions.
Famous moments
The Pan-African Parliament — the African Union's legislature — sat at Gallagher from its 2004 inauguration. Miss World 2009's grand final was staged here. Securex, Africa's leading security trade show, calls it home. But the most significant recurring booking is electoral: every national election, South Africa's results are declared from Gallagher — the IEC's National Results Operations Centre, called a 'theatre of electoral transparency,' ran the 2024 election night here.
Things you didn't know
For years, the entire African continent's parliament sat in a Midrand events venue — not a government building, not a purpose-built legislature, but a convention centre off the N1. A common myth places CODESA (the talks that ended apartheid) at Gallagher Estate — it didn't happen here. Those negotiations took place at the Kempton Park World Trade Centre, now the site of Emperors Palace.

The 2026 calendar includes Sign Africa/FESPA Africa (September), China Homelife SA (September) and World Health Expo (October). Gallagher's trade-show and exhibition calendar remains the densest of any single venue in the country.
