The Palace — R830 million of fantasy
The Palace of the Lost City, opened in 1992, was built in just 28 months at a cost of R830 million with a workforce peaking near 10,000. It required 8 million bricks, a dome ceiling painted by nine artists over 5,000 hours, a chandelier of 10,000 pieces of Czech rock crystal, and 500 km of electrical wiring. The entire design draws on Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines.
Recent investment
A R350-million refurbishment of the Sun City Hotel — all 350 rooms — was unveiled in September 2025, reopening in time for the Nedbank Golf Challenge. This keeps the mid-tier accommodation current and gives event producers a refreshed option between the Palace and the Cabanas.
