A Tuscan village under a fake sky
Montecasino opened in November 2000 as a R1.4-billion Tsogo Sun development, designed by America's Creative Kingdom with South African architect Joel Martins to replicate a Tuscan hilltop village — named after Italy's Monte Cassino. The casino 'village' sits under a fake painted sky that runs from daylight on one side to dusk on the other, above cobblestones artificially aged to fake centuries of wear. It was, and remains, one of the most ambitious themed environments ever built in Africa.
Gauteng's most visited destination
Over 9.3 million visitors a year make Montecasino Gauteng's most visited entertainment destination. The Pivot Conference Centre — the venue most relevant to corporate event planners — runs nine venues for 5 to 500 people, backed by 700+ hotel rooms on site. For larger-format entertainment, the Teatro (opened 2007, built for R100m+) seats 1,870, making it South Africa's largest theatre and one of the world's ten biggest lyric theatres.

The Teatro launched with Disney's The Lion King in 2007 — one of the longest-running shows in South African theatre history. Pretty Woman: The Musical debuted in April 2025, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's CATS opens 17 January 2026. Things you didn't know
The Bird Gardens keep Nicobar pigeons — the closest living relatives of the extinct dodo — and house the world's largest collection of South African cycads, approximately 750 specimens of plants older than the dinosaurs. The entire complex is a masterclass in themed immersion: every surface, from the cracked plaster walls to the weathered shutters, was artificially aged, and the sky dome means the experience doesn't change whether it's a Highveld thunderstorm or a winter morning outside.

The challenge is that Montecasino is primarily an entertainment destination, so noise bleed and foot traffic during peak casino hours need to be factored into evening event timings. The Fourways location gives easy access from Sandton and the northern suburbs but can be slow from the south during rush hour.
