Overview & Capacity

The Durban ICC is KwaZulu-Natal's only true congress machine and, on floor area, the biggest convention centre on the continent. We treat it exactly the way we treat the CTICC in Cape Town: book it when the delegate count justifies the scale, then work the foyers hard so it feels like an occasion rather than a hall hire. The integrated Durban Exhibition Centre handles trade-show builds the hotels simply cannot, and in-house catering keeps quality predictable. The recurring review gripe is parking and security-desk attitude, so B&W briefs a dedicated arrivals plan on every job here.

The Story Behind Durban ICC

The facts most venue listings never tell you — researched and source-checked by B&W Productions.

Mandela's investment in democracy

The Durban ICC was South Africa's first international convention centre, officially opened by Nelson Mandela on 8 August 1997 — he called it 'an investment in our democratic future in more ways than one.' It was renamed in 2007 for Chief Albert Luthuli, the 1960 Nobel Peace laureate and ANC president, who lived and is buried in KwaZulu-Natal.

Scale

The 2007 ICC Arena expansion created what the venue claims is the largest flat-floor, column-free exhibition space in Africa. The combined complex offers up to 112,000 m² of event space, with a 21,820 m² exhibition hall and a 7,424 m² ballroom. For a producer, the column-free floor is the critical detail — it means any configuration is possible without structural obstructions dictating the layout.

Where the AU was born

The African Union was effectively born in this building — the 2002 summit that transformed the Organisation of African Unity into the AU happened here. Other landmark events include COP17 (2011, ~15,000 delegates), the World Conference against Racism (2001), Africa's first International AIDS Conference (2000), the 5th BRICS Summit (2013 — Xi Jinping's first as President), and the 2010 World Cup preliminary draw.

Things you didn't know

In 2023 the Durban ICC hosted the World Table Tennis Championships — the first time the event was held in Africa in 84 years. The venue has won 'Africa's Leading Meetings and Conference Centre' at the World Travel Awards 20 times — most recently in 2025. In 2024, South Africa's Parliament relocated its opening sitting to the CTICC in Cape Town, but the Durban ICC remains the country's original — and arguably most historically significant — convention address.

Right now

The complex is currently being upgraded ahead of hosting the 46th SADC Summit in August 2026. The Durban beachfront location and direct access from King Shaka International Airport continue to make it the first choice for international conferences choosing KwaZulu-Natal.
