The arch that tells a story
Moses Mabhida Stadium was built between 2006 and 2009 for approximately R3.4 billion in Durban and named after anti-apartheid leader Moses Mabhida. The grand arch was inspired by the Y of the South African flag: two legs on the south merging into one on the north — a divided nation coming together. The arch is 350 m long, 106 m high and weighs 2,600 tonnes. The roof uses 46,000 m² of translucent Teflon-coated membrane, and the stadium claims 27 design awards.
The numbers
Capacity sits at approximately 56,000, expandable to 85,000. The stadium hosted seven 2010 World Cup matches including the Spain–Germany semi-final in front of 60,690 fans. A 2011 T20 cricket match against India drew 54,000 — a record cricket crowd for Africa. Top Gear Festival ran here in 2012 and 2013.
The world's tallest swing
The Big Rush Big Swing holds the Guinness World Record as the world's tallest swing — the only stadium swing on Earth, launching riders from 106 m into a 220 m arc over the pitch. A funicular SkyCar rides the arch itself, offering views across Durban and the Indian Ocean. The seat colours in the stadium are designed to mimic the Indian Ocean washing onto the beach.
Things you didn't know
The arch is not just decorative — it is the structural element that holds the roof. Without it, the entire canopy system would need a conventional ring-beam, which would have been heavier and more expensive. The Y-shape also created a natural mounting point for the Big Rush swing and the SkyCar, neither of which were in the original brief but became the stadium's most famous post-World Cup features.
Right now
An R284-million renovation started in March 2024 targets completion by 2028, including R25 million for a new SkyCar. The stadium remains Durban's primary large-format events address and is central to the city's pitch for future international sporting events.
