The course that hosted golf's first million-dollar prize
The Gary Player Country Club is the championship course at Sun City, designed by Gary Player himself and home to the Million Dollar Golf Challenge since its inception on New Year's Eve 1981. That first event saw Johnny Miller beat Seve Ballesteros in sudden death, and by 1987 Ian Woosnam took home golf's first-ever $1 million prize here — a purse that made global headlines and cemented Sun City's reputation as a venue willing to rewrite the rules of sports entertainment.
The Nedbank Golf Challenge
The Challenge evolved into the Nedbank Golf Challenge, now a DP World Tour event and one of the richest tournaments in world golf. The course sits in the Pilanesberg volcanic crater, so the setting is inherently dramatic — delegates and guests at clubhouse functions look out over a landscape that is simultaneously a world-class golf layout and a geological oddity.
The clubhouse as an event venue

Things you didn't know
During the apartheid-era cultural and sporting boycott, the Sun City resort — including the golf course — sat in the then-Bophuthatswana homeland, which allowed it to host international sportspeople and entertainers who were officially barred from South Africa. The 1985 protest anthem 'Sun City' was recorded by 49 artists pledging never to play there. Today the course is one of the few championship layouts on earth where you can spot wildlife between holes.
