The course with crocodiles at the 13th
The Lost City Golf Course opened alongside the Palace of the Lost City as the resort's second championship layout, deliberately designed as the more theatrical of Sun City's two courses. Its signature feature is the 13th hole, where the green is guarded by a pool of live Nile crocodiles — a hazard that exists nowhere else in professional golf and that makes every corporate golf day here a conversation piece before a single shot is played.
Built on a fantasy
The entire Lost City concept draws on Rider Haggard's 1885 novel King Solomon's Mines — the Palace hotel, the Bridge of Time that 'quakes' on schedule, and the golf course all sustain the fiction of a rediscovered ancient city. The R830-million Palace went up in 28 months with a workforce peaking near 10,000 and required 8 million bricks, so the course sits in a landscape that was engineered at a scale more typically associated with theme parks than golf clubs.
Event use
The clubhouse hosts corporate golf days, team-building events and private functions, and the proximity to the Palace hotel, the Convention Centre and the Superbowl means a producer can run a golf day as the opening act of a multi-day conference without any transfers. The resort's R350-million refurbishment of the Sun City Hotel (completed September 2025) keeps the wider campus current.
