Sun City Convention Centre
Overview & Capacity
This is the convention anchor of the entire province, full stop. Three convention venues topping out at 1,200 cinema in the King's Ballroom, 27 conference rooms, two auditoriums, and the whole Sun City machine wrapped around it - hotels, casino, restaurants, golf. It is quote-based and not cheap, and you will work within Sun International's in-house F&B, but the trade-off is a venue that genuinely runs itself. For a national conference that needs to feel like an occasion, nothing else in North West competes.
The Story Behind Sun City Convention Centre
The facts most venue listings never tell you — researched and source-checked by B&W Productions.
Inside the volcano's convention wing
Sun City Convention Centre sits within Sol Kerzner's resort complex in the crater of an ancient extinct volcano in the Pilanesberg, North West Province. The resort itself opened on 7 December 1979, originally exploiting a Bophuthatswana homeland loophole that allowed gambling banned in South Africa proper. The convention centre was built as the resort matured from a casino destination into a full-scale conferencing address, and today it is one of the few SA venues where delegates can walk from a plenary session to a game drive in the same afternoon.
27 rooms, two auditoriums, and the Superbowl next door
The Convention Centre offers 27 conference rooms, three convention venues and two auditoriums seating up to 1,200 delegates. For larger-format events the Superbowl — which flexes from 920 to 6,000 people — sits within the same resort campus, and the combined Sun City address gives a producer an unusual range: intimate board meetings, mid-scale conferences, full arena-format award shows and outdoor team-building, all without leaving the property.
Famous moments across the resort
Queen played the Superbowl in October 1984; Sinatra (1981), Rod Stewart (1983) and Elton John (1983) all performed here during the cultural boycott era. The Million Dollar Golf Challenge began on New Year's Eve 1981 — Johnny Miller beat Seve Ballesteros in sudden death — and in 1987 Ian Woosnam took golf's first-ever $1 million prize at Sun City. Miss World was hosted five times between 1992 and 2001. The 1985 protest anthem 'Sun City,' with 49 artists pledging never to play there, remains one of the most politically significant songs in South African entertainment history.
Things you didn't know
The Palace of the Lost City, the resort's flagship hotel, went up in just 28 months with a workforce peaking near 10,000 at a cost of R830 million. It required 8 million bricks, a dome ceiling painted by nine artists over 5,000 hours, a chandelier of 10,000 pieces of Czech rock crystal, and the entire Lost City fantasy draws on Rider Haggard's 1885 novel King Solomon's Mines — including a Bridge of Time that 'quakes' on schedule. The resort hides 500 km of electrical wiring.
Right now
A R350-million refurbishment of the Sun City Hotel — all 350 rooms — was unveiled in September 2025, reopening in time for the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The convention centre benefits from the resort-wide investment, and the Pilanesberg location remains the go-to address when a conference brief calls for a bush setting within two hours of Johannesburg.
