Overview & Capacity

The Superbowl is where South Africa's big nights have happened since the 80s, and it still earns the reputation. A flat-floor indoor arena that runs 920 to 6,000, it takes full touring production without blinking and sits ten minutes from Pilanesberg airport with an entire resort attached. For corporate work it is the rare room that can make a year-end function feel like a stadium concert. Get the tech pack early and budget properly - this is a production venue, priced like one.

The Story Behind Sun City Superbowl

The facts most venue listings never tell you — researched and source-checked by B&W Productions.

Born from a volcano and a loophole

Sol Kerzner opened Sun City on 7 December 1979 inside the crater of an ancient extinct volcano in the Pilanesberg — placed in the then-Bophuthatswana homeland to exploit an apartheid-era loophole that allowed gambling banned in South Africa proper. The Superbowl was the resort's purpose-built entertainment arena, and from the start it was designed to host the kind of large-format shows and events that no other venue in southern Africa could touch at the time.

Scale and flexibility

The Superbowl flexes from 920 to 6,000 people, making it one of the most versatile arena-format venues in the country. Combined with the adjacent Convention Centre (27 conference rooms, three convention venues, two auditoriums for up to 1,200 delegates), the Sun City campus gives a producer an unusual range: an arena show one night, a plenary the next morning, and a game drive or golf day in between — all without leaving the property.

The boycott-era concerts

Queen played the Superbowl in October 1984; Frank Sinatra (1981), Rod Stewart (1983) and Elton John (1983) all performed here through the cultural boycott. These shows made global headlines — and provoked the 1985 protest anthem 'Sun City,' recorded by 49 artists including Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis and Lou Reed, all pledging never to play there. That single moment turned a casino arena into one of the most politically significant entertainment venues on earth.

The Million Dollar Golf Challenge

The Million Dollar Golf Challenge began on New Year's Eve 1981 — Johnny Miller beat Seve Ballesteros in sudden death — and in 1987 Ian Woosnam took golf's first-ever $1 million prize at Sun City. The event, now the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the DP World Tour, remains one of the richest tournaments in world golf. Miss World was hosted five times between 1992 and 2001.

Things you didn't know

The R830-million Palace of the Lost City went up in just 28 months with a workforce peaking near 10,000. It took 8 million bricks, a dome ceiling painted by nine artists over 5,000 hours, and a chandelier of 10,000 pieces of Czech rock crystal. The entire Lost City fantasy draws on Rider Haggard's 1885 novel King Solomon's Mines — including a Bridge of Time that 'quakes' on schedule. The resort hides 500 km of electrical wiring.

Right now

A R350-million refurbishment of the Sun City Hotel — all 350 rooms — was unveiled in September 2025, reopening in time for the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The Superbowl continues to anchor the resort's large-format entertainment calendar, and the Pilanesberg location remains the go-to address when a brief calls for spectacle in a bush setting within two hours of Johannesburg.
