Africa's largest flat-floor, column-free exhibition space
The Durban ICC Arena was created as part of a 2007 expansion of the Durban ICC complex, renamed for Chief Albert Luthuli — the 1960 Nobel Peace laureate. The Arena claims the title of the largest flat-floor, column-free exhibition space in Africa, and it sits within a combined complex offering up to 112,000 m² of event space, with a 21,820 m² exhibition hall and 7,424 m² ballroom.
The ICC's history — and the Arena's role in it
The Durban ICC was South Africa's first international convention centre, officially opened by Nelson Mandela on 8 August 1997 — he called it 'an investment in our democratic future in more ways than one.' The Arena extended the complex's capacity for large-format exhibitions, trade shows and arena-configuration events that the original convention halls could not accommodate. The African Union was effectively born in this building — the 2002 summit that transformed the OAU into the AU happened here.
Major events
The complex has hosted COP17 (2011, ~15,000 delegates), the World Conference against Racism (2001), Africa's first International AIDS Conference (2000), the 5th BRICS Summit (2013 — Xi Jinping's first), and the 2010 World Cup preliminary draw. In 2023 it hosted the World Table Tennis Championships — the first in Africa in 84 years.

The Durban ICC has won 'Africa's Leading Meetings and Conference Centre' at the World Travel Awards 20 times — most recently in 2025. It is currently being upgraded ahead of hosting the 46th SADC Summit in August 2026.
