Built to harmonise with Table Mountain
DHL Stadium was built in 33 months for R4.4 billion and handed over in December 2009. German architects gmp designed its curving silhouette as 'a kind of bottom note in a harmonious triad' with Table Mountain and Signal Hill, and wrapped it in a silver glass-fibre veil that changes appearance with the weather. DHL took naming rights in 2021.
Scale and turnaround
The stadium held 64,100 seats for the World Cup and now runs at 55,000 with the upper tier converted to suites. After the tournament, it was so under-used there were public calls to demolish it — the original French operators walked away calling it 'non-viable.' The turnaround came with the Stormers' move from Newlands in 2021 and an aggressive concert calendar: by 2022–23, revenue beat targets by 30%.
Famous moments
Eight 2010 World Cup matches including a semi-final. U2, Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Eminem and Lionel Richie have all played here. Ed Sheeran's 2019 shows helped break South Africa's touring record of 230,000 tickets. Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal before 51,954 fans at 2020's Match in Africa — a world-record attendance for a tennis match. The Stormers won the inaugural URC-era 2023 final here.
Things you didn't know
The stadium appears in the Denzel Washington film Safe House and the video game Dirt 5. The near-demolition story is the one that matters for event planners: the venue went from white elephant to profitable entertainment address in under three years once the right programming and operator model were in place.
Right now
Calabash 2025 brought Robbie Williams and Green Day's first-ever South African show. The Springboks played the Barbarians here in June 2025 — a first on South African soil. The stadium is now Cape Town's primary large-format concert and sporting venue, with the Green Point location and Atlantic Seaboard views making it one of the most photogenic event addresses in the world.
